DESCRIPTION: A project
in the Venetian lagoon for the recovery of the island of Lazzaretto Novo
is part of a general project entitled "For the rebirth of an island". There
are excavation in the area of the camere and the priorado of the ancient
lazzaretto (1468—1792) as part of an archaeology and history of public
health project to verify the wall structures and the foundations present
on the island. In-depth tests are verifying the wall structure and the
foundations on the island.
PERIOD:
15—18th centuries and precedent periods.
COUNTRY: Italy.
LOCATION: Island of Lazzaretto
Nuovo (Venice Lagoon), Venice.
TRAVEL: Train to Venice, then
vaporetto (public boat) to the island.
DURATION: 10 days; August.
AGE: Minimum 18.
QUALIFICATIONS: No experience
necessary.
WORK: On-site training covers
the correct use of instruments and tools, identification and retrieval
of stratigraphic units (SU), examination and classification of finds (pottery,
numismatics, glass fragments, anthropology), archaeological drawing, survey,
and graphical reconstruction.
LANGUAGE: Italian, French, English.
ACCOMMODATION: Lodging with
hot water showers. Board meals prepared by a cook with the volunteers.
COST: EUR400 (approx.US$420).
Boat pass for Venice costs about EUR30.
