DESCRIPTION: The National Trust for Scotland owns around 12,000 acres of the southern slopes of Ben Lawers above Loch Tay in Perthshire. The remains of prehistoric and medieval archaeological sites attest the area displays extensive evidence for past human activity.  The most numerous traces of settlement belong to the last 400 years and form one of the best preserved and well documented landscapes of its type in Scotland. The Field School is investigating the Medieval and later rural settlements and associated structures.

PERIOD: Medieval and later.

COUNTRY: United Kingdom.

LOCATION: Southern slopes of Ben Lawers above Loch Tay in Perthshire.

TRAVEL: Pick-up and drop-off in Edinburgh. The nearest train station is in Crianlarich.

DURATION: 1—2 weeks; July to September.

AGE: Minimum 18.

QUALIFICATIONS: No experience necessary. Professional archaeologists supervise and provide instruction in excavation techniques.

WORK: Excavation.

LANGUAGE: English.

ACCOMMODATION: Meggernie Scout Centre in Glen Lyon. The Centre is a large converted farmhouse with kitchen, dining/activity hall, showers, and drying room.

COST: GB£90  (approx. US$ 145) per week (GB£75  for students, unwaged or retired people).
