DESCRIPTION: The Vindolanda
'vicus', or Roman town outside the last fort at Vindolanda c. 212—300 AD,
is among the best explored in Roman Britain and the Roman Empire as a whole,
yet at least half of the area is believed to contain the 3rd-century town
and late cemeteries yet to be explored. Trenches will be cut to explore
the earlier military remains from the pre-Hadrianic era of the site, including
the exploration of a deep fort ditch and locate features from the 2nd-century
forts.

LOCATION: Hexham Northumberland.
About the centre of Hadrian's Wall near the village of Bardon Mill, 2 miles
(3km) behind the Wall.
TRAVEL: Must provide own travel.
Some public transport but irregular. From the international airport in
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, take subway or taxi to the Once Brewed Youth Hostel
or the Hayden Bridge Lodge in Vindolanda. Arrive on the Saturday and contact
the organisation. Work will commence on Sunday.
DURATION: 5-day sessions; April
to August.
AGE: Minimum 16.
QUALIFICATIONS: No experience
necessary.
WORK: Excavation of Roman fort
and vicus. Sunday to Thursday.
